Atomic Avenue has some nice things to say about One Last Song #1
The future One Last Song paints is bleak, though perhaps not completely unrealistic given the current political climate of the United States, and the interesting artistic choices by creators CJ Hurtt and Shawn Richter, especially in the way of panel layout and scene juxtaposition (they like to cross-cut a lot), really sell the paranoia and general unease that make this book compelling.
All I can say is the review is friggen brilliant. Zero Punctuation [Escapist Magazine]
Ryan Brandt has a whole lot of kind words for Fiendish Fables.
First off, I want to congratulate John on a beautiful looking book. Really leaped out of all the other Dial R books at San Diego and comes off truly as a professional book. I will say that reading the book, I think Fiendish Fables ended up being a much better title than Whisper/Scream because most of the stories came off as being fables (since a whole lot of 'true' fables were very dark, had some sort of 'meaning' to the story or comeuppance happen) and they definitely were fiendish to say the least. I'll go on record as saying that I enjoyed the book a lot and it is worth the price. It's not flawless (I'll get to that in a second) but it really showcases John's talent and why he's been able to get most of the deals he's gotten with Arcana and other places. It's because John is just that dang good.We think John's that dang good too.
Did Sam Raimi forget to take his pills? Venom = Cool Sandman = Cool Tobey Maguire's quivering bottom lip = Crap multiplied by every single audience member cringing from watching a grown man melt into dramatic goo. Tobey pretending he's a pimp/dance-a-thon = Crap Bruce Cambell = Badass
The concept of One Last Song is fascinating, and I can see the potential for this book. The first issue deals with an American government who controls the mass media. Only by going underground do some media attempt to get the truth out there. Amanda Casey is one of the so called "rebels." She is a musician who tries to get a message across to her audience, a hidden message about the government wrapped in a love song.Check out the full review.
I got the opportunity to check out this book early, and as I’m always up for a good indy read, I jumped at that chance. This is one of those myriad of self published or small publisher books that gets overlooked in Previews, and really shouldn’t. CJ and Shawn have put together a compelling tale of a not-to-distant future. The Department of Homeland Security is now actively patrolling our streets, and in a caricature of our current state of affairs, Free Speech has gone the way of the dodo as the DHS can arrest, detain, and even execute at their sole discretion.Read the whole review over at Newsarama (scroll down for the review)
